Preventing Gaseous Fire Suppression from Causing Server Damage

Some data centers have recently experienced outages which have occurred both because of actual fires and by routine fire drills, when the data center fire suppression systems were deployed. As servers evolve to hold increased capacities of data, they have become more fragile. The sound or shockwave of a clean agent fire suppression system can damage servers. When a fire suppression system can cause an outage, it becomes a completely different problem for data centers to mitigate, in addition to the risks of actual fires.  

During Data Center Dynamics Zettastructure Conference, two separate businesses provided different data center solutions that will make server rooms both safe from fires and the clean agent fire suppression systems that protect them.

ING Bank Data Center Ironically Crashes in Fire Mitigation System Test

Fires that erupt within a server room can quickly cause damage to IT equipment, and result in a lengthy loss of uptime for the data center. Earlier this week, Delta Airlines released its company’s financial losses, which total 150 Million dollars, due to its Atlanta, Georgia Headquarters data center crashing. Delta’s loss of uptime was caused by a small fire.
