Data Center and IT Salaries, 2017

Data center and IT employees are the unsung heroes of the software industry. Even if IT jobs don't carry the same level of glamor as frontline developers, these are still lucrative careers. But data center employees need to be vigilant about changing trends to make sure they are ahead of the competition.

State of Data Center Related Jobs and Careers

In general, the IT industry employment trends in the US are positive. According to Dice, the IT industry unemployment rate was at 2.5 percent in the first quarter of 2017. There was a major increase in the demand for information security analysts. Web developers, computer systems analysts, network and systems administrators, IT managers and programmers saw their unemployment rates decrease. Only computer support specialists and software developers saw an increase in the unemployment rates. Even though these patterns are for the overall IT industry, data center employees can expect similar trends.

According to data collected by PayScale, the data center industry annual salaries look like this:

  • Data Center Manager: Average salary $87,077 with range of $50K-$125K
  • Network Engineer: Average salary $71,386 with range of $58K-$91K
  • Systems Administrator: Average salary $50,000 with range of $34K-$71K
  • Data Center Technician: Average salary $43,236 with range of $33K-$68K
  • Marketing Manager: Average salary $60,098 with range of $40K-$85K
  • Software Engineer: Average salary $102,500 with range of $59K-$139K
  • Network Engineer: Average salary $99,990 with range of $67K-$124K

 According to data collected by Glassdoor, annual salaries look like this: 

  • Data Center Manager: Average salary $94,937 with range of $71k-$126k
  • Network Engineer: Average salary $78,480 with range of $54k-$109k
  • Systems Administrator: Average salary $71,144 with range of $52k-$99k
  • Data Center Technician: Average salary $61,554 with range of $44k-$86k
  • Marketing Manager: Average salary $85,858 with range of $60k-$121k
  • Software Engineer: Average salary $109,087 with range of $75K-$150K
  • Network Engineer: Average salary $98,699 with range of $70k-$135k

The salaries are higher on Glassdoor, but keep in mind Glassdoor has more data-points than PayScale. 

According to Salary.com, Data Center Director median annual salary is $149,920 with a $133K-$168K range.

Salaries Across the Globe 

With global competition, you should also be aware of the salaries in other countries. The Cisco Learning Network collected data from 2016 Robert Half report. Here is a comparison of network engineer and infrastructure analyst salaries across different countries:

  • Australia: Network Engineer (Melbourne) positions have a salary range of $75,000 - $120,000 (Annual Salary in Australian Dollar)
  • Brazil: Infrastructure Analyst (revenue < R$500 million) positions have a salary range of R$3,100 - R$5,000 (Monthly salary in Brazilian real)
  • France: Network and System Administrator (3-5 years) positions have a salary range of €36,000 - €46,000 (Annual salary in euros)
  • Germany: Network Administrator (3-5 years) positions have a salary range of €36,500 - €42,000 (Annual salary in euros)
  • Hong Kong: Network Engineer positions have a salary range of $420,000 - $720,000 (Annual salary in Hong Kong dollars)
  • Japan: Network Support Engineer positions have a salary range of ¥8,000,000 - ¥12,000,000 (Annual salary in Japanese yen)
  • Singapore: Network Engineer (Commerce and Industry) positions have a salary range of $60,000 - $100,000 (Annual salary in Singapore dollars)
  • United Kingdom: Network Engineer positions have a salary range of £35,750 - £53,750 (Annual salary in British pound)
